Painting on Paper Series – Black Film

“Black Film”
Acrylic on collage, 2007

When I got the opportunity to study abroad on Temple University’s Rome campus, I signed up for a Painting on Paper course. I would say that this was one of the most influential courses I’ve taken in my art studies. I really enjoyed creating collages and using them as canvases for painting. A lot of the work I’ve done since has harken back to this class and this is one of the pieces I created for that course.

I bought the Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair that year, and they had a great portfolio celebrating film noir. I photocopied the scenes I liked the most and stenciled a murder scene on top. Kind of reminds me of Saul Bass (I know, very cliche reference, but the man IS a legend for a reason) if he did graffiti on the side. 🙂
