Guess what? On top of my graphic design, web development, and fine art pursuits, I also do sewing too.
I got into it when I was in grad school creating my thesis project. If you are curious about what that project was, go here to check it out. 🙂
Anyway, as I got into research and teaching myself to sew for this thesis, my interest in fashion grew. My incessant reading of fashion magazines made me realize that so many items from these luxury fashion houses are at the very least attainable through sewing patterns. Of course the more avant-garde designs are outside my own capabilities, but there are many clothing items that are based in simple pattern design and I will find these patterns at places like Jo-anns on sale for no more than $5.00 a pop.
So on that note, I have been bitten by the DIY bug and have started sewing things for myself. Learning about sizing and tailoring pieces to my figure has been very self-empowering, since I have purchased my share of clothes with too-long hems and awkward fits with my pear-shaped figure. I like the process and I hope to get better at it so that my wardrobe is more customized to me. 🙂
